With eight properties to choose from, you can pretty much base yourself anywhere in Berlin with budget design chain Motel One, making it an ideal choice for city breakers. I opted for the Spittelmarkt location, as it’s one of their newer properties, minutes from the city’s central attractions and only a short train ride to the bars and clubs of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district.
Check-in was a fuss-free affair, allowing me to dump bags in my room and head out again within minutes of arrival for a day of sightseeing. Later, when I finally crashed out for the night, it was a relief returning to a stylish and comfortable room with flatscreen TV, free wi-fi and large monsoon shower — the perfect means to unwind before bed.
The breakfast buffet the following morning was impressive given the price, ranging from cereals and croissants to cold meats, fruits and teas, while the One Lounge — a combined lobby, cafe and bar area — was a pleasant place to sit and read the papers before another day out in the city.
Light on facilities but offering cozy rooms, a 24-hour bar and a great location — all at a very reasonable price — Motel One offers the perfect base for leisure or business travelers on a budget but who don’t want to scrimp on comfort.
